- Calculating and distance and paces
- Reading elevation and contour lines
- Going form paper Map to field
- Finding bearings with your compass
- Finding direction and Traveling by compass
- Relocating a spot

Materials needed for this class:
- Compass: Silva rangers 515 CL sighting compass is recommended or equivalent. Needed features: 360 degree bezel with 2 degree increments, clinometer, 1/20-inch scale, millimeter rules, silicone feet for map gripping, adjustable declination, sighting mirror with vee notch, side rulers with scales of 1:24,000, 1:25,000, and 1:50,000. http://www.thecompassstore.com/ranger1.html

By Car Directions
From New York City, take the Long Island Expressway (LIE, I-495) eastbound exit 62, and follow Nichols Road (Route 97) north. Continue until you reach the LAST entrance to Stonybrook on the Left side, before you reach Rt 25A. (If you reach the end of Nichols Rd "T" intersection with 25A you have gone too far. The entrance is at a 4-way intersection with a traffic signal, about a 1/4 mile South of 25A.)
Go into the entrance, at the top of the hill turn LEFT, make the first RIGHT at the BIG DEC sign. Go up the DEC driveway and pull into the Parking lot on your LEFT. The door is electronically locked, so please be on time so that you can be let in, or make sure you have phone numbers of people in the class if you will be late.

- Am I really here? Proving you are in the location you think you are
- Plotting routes, scouting alternative routes for teams to follow
- Finding direction with out a compass (or GPS)
- Myths and facts about finding direction from land, natural clues
- Basic map making
- Day and Night navigation
- Plotting points on the map and finding them in the real world

Night search (with a show of skill proficiency and by invite only)

No cost for class (black and white xerox map will be provided). If a color USGS Quad map of the area is wanted cost $8.00
